Your Voice Matters This Week — Why the Primary Election Is Important
This week, Illinois voters have an important opportunity to make their voices heard.
The Primary Election on March 17th may not always receive the same attention as the general election in November, but it plays a critical role in shaping the future of our communities and our state.
Primaries are where voters decide who will appear on the ballot in the general election. In many ways, they set the direction for the conversations, priorities, and leadership choices that follow.
While it can be easy to overlook a primary election, the decisions made during this stage help determine how we move forward on the issues that affect everyday life across Illinois.
Across our communities, people are talking about many of the same concerns:
the rising cost of living
housing affordability
safe and healthy neighborhoods
strong public schools
access to healthcare and mental health services
ensuring that government works for the people it serves
These are not abstract policy discussions. They are real issues shaping the daily lives of families throughout our region and across the state. Illinois voters will ultimately decide which leaders will carry these conversations forward and help shape solutions in Springfield.
Participating in elections is one of the most direct ways we engage in our democracy. It’s how we show up for our neighbors, our families, and the future we want to build together.
Whether you choose to vote early or on Election Day, taking a few minutes to cast a ballot is a meaningful way to ensure your voice is part of the process.
Just as important, encouraging friends, family members, and neighbors to participate helps strengthen the civic engagement that keeps our communities vibrant and representative.
Democracy works best when people are informed, involved, and willing to participate. This week is one of those moments.
If you haven’t already made a plan to vote, now is the time. Every vote contributes to the direction our communities and our state will take.
Because the future of Illinois is shaped by the voices of the people who choose to show up.
THIS WEEK IN THE 27TH…
This week was full of meaningful moments across the district. I loved spotting our campaign signs popping up out in the community—it’s always a reminder of the many neighbors who are supporting and engaging in this process.
I also attended the State of Arlington Heights, where local leaders shared updates on the work happening in the community and the priorities shaping the village’s future.
One especially memorable moment was meeting journalist Norah O’Donnell and hearing her speak about her new book, We the Women, which highlights the stories of unsung heroes throughout American history.
I also had the opportunity to spend some time in District 23 elementary schools and was inspired by the thoughtful Women’s History Month displays and book selections celebrating the contributions of women past and present. Moments like these are a powerful reminder of how connected our community is—through civic engagement, education, and the stories that shape who we are.
Thank you to everyone who continues to show up, speak up, and invest in the work of shaping our shared future. I’m deeply grateful to be on this journey with you.
Let’s keep going—because together, we’re stronger.
With gratitude,
Carina Santa Maria
Candidate for Illinois State Senate, District 27
