Forums like this are one of the best parts of local democracy. There are no ads, no mailers, and no thirty-second soundbites. Candidates sit in the same room, answer the same questions, and you get to decide for yourself who is ready to represent you in Springfield. The League of Women Voters has run these forums for decades, and they're moderated and nonpartisan. They exist so voters can make informed choices, and I'm grateful they do this work.
Most of what I've learned about policy, I learned by listening.
As a social worker, I sat with families trying to keep a roof over their heads, parents trying to find mental health care for their kids, and grandparents raising grandchildren with almost no support. The answers that actually helped never came from a podium. They came from paying attention to what people were living through. I want this campaign to work the same way.
So come with your questions. The audience will be invited to submit questions during the forum, and I want to hear what's on your mind. Maybe it's what it costs to keep living in the community you love. Maybe it's what our public schools need, how we keep our neighborhoods safe through prevention and real investment, or how families get access to care when they need it. If it matters to your household, it belongs in that room.
And if you can't ask a question, come anyway. A full room tells everyone running for office that people in this district are paying attention, and that matters.
The League is hosting forums for other local races that afternoon too, so it's a good chance to hear from several of the candidates on your ballot before November 3.
The full forum will be posted for free viewing on the LWVAH-MP-BG YouTube channel a few days after the event, accessible at lwvah.org.
I hope to see you Sunday. Bring a neighbor.
Can’t make it?
Thank you for all your support – hope to see you there!
